MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER THIS OCTOBER

(Orlando, FL) September 30, 2008 – Thousands of local breast cancer survivors, volunteers, businesses and community members will unite to fight breast cancer this October at the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Survivor Reception and 5K Walk events in downtown Orlando. The 10th annual reception and noncompetitive walk are the largest in the state of Florida, both of which benefit breast cancer research.

The Survivor Reception, scheduled for October 7 at the Orlando Museum of Art, is a free event to area breast cancer survivors and caregivers. The reception will feature a night of food, live music featuring blues guitar from Brad Catron, complimentary museum admission and support to the victims of the disease.

On October 18, the noncompetitive, inspirational 5k walk at Lake Eola aims to raise awareness and critical funds to fight breast cancer, and provide hope to all people facing the disease. Orlando’s Making Strides event is one of more than 125 walks being held across the country and is the largest Strides walk in the state of Florida. Last year, 3,500 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer participants raised a record $600,000 in Orlando Metro to fund lifesaving research and support programs to further the progress against this disease.

“More than 178,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, and more than 40,000 will die from the disease,” says Susan Makowski, manager of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Metro Orlando. “In Florida alone, 12,000 women will be newly diagnosed and more than 2,500 will die from the disease. We hope that the community will embrace the walk more than ever before this year as we hope to exceed our record breaking numbers form last year and continue Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.”

Currently, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is still accepting teams for the walk, RSVPs for the reception, donations and volunteers for both events. For more details, contact Marlene at 407-843-8680 ext. 2535.
